The History of Soap
Soap-making dates back as early as 2800 BC. At such a primitive date, one can assume that the soap was primitive as well. By the 7th Century, soap-making had become a craft, but still used very crude ingredients. These crude ingredients would also be used when the trade was introduced to the American Colonies in 1608. The science of modern soap-making would not be discovered until the 1800's. From that time until 1916, soap-making was in essence the same; this is when the first synthetic detergent was created in Germany because of a shortage of fats during the war. Today, the majority of folks use detergents and chemical-based soaps daily for their clothes, dishes, and their bodies. These detergents and chemicals strip the body of the natural oils that we produce, leaving us with dry, itchy, and irritated skin. We then use lotions
(made from the natural elements derived from traditional soap-making to replenish these oils). This is how your larger commercial soap and lotion companies make their money from the consumers. On a larger scale, the synthetic soaps we use not only affect our bodies and households, but the planet as well by washing down our drains into our water supplies and soils.
What is Glycerin?
Glycerin is a natural humectant that attracts moisture to the skin. Glycerin soaps are renowned for their gentleness, moisturizing and softening abilities. However, not all glycerin soaps are the same. Most products available on the market today contain detergents and preservatives, along with various chemicals used to improve clarity and increase lathering. These soaps are no longer “pure soap” products by the FDA values.
Our Soaps
Our soaps are made with pure vegetable-based glycerin (vegan), natural ingredients that come from our local farmer's market and pure essential oils. There are no detergents, chemicals, artificial fragrances, lathering agents or synthetic additives in our soaps. Each soap listed on our website includes the ingredients we use to make our soap as well as the common uses for that specific soap.
